How creators use Asset Lab
Creators use Asset Lab as a local studio: plan in cheap stills, spend on video only once the board is right, add voice and music, and keep every file on their own disk. Below are five workflows, step by step, built only from features that ship in Asset Lab 2.6 today. They're patterns, not testimonials.
Updated September 22, 2026 · Costs are Fal.ai's raw rates as quoted in the app; the Generate button always shows the exact figure.
1. A short branded spot: storyboard → Director → export
Who: marketers, indie founders, product storytellers. Uses: characters and locations, storyboards, Director, the Audio module.
- Save the character and the location once in Prompt Lab.
- In Director, write a brief and plan the shots for about 2¢.
- Draw a still per shot (about 12¢ each at 2K) and approve the board.
- Send it to video: shot by shot on the model of your choice, or the whole board as one Seedance draft.
- Approve a take per shot, give characters their voices or use one narrator, lay music, mix, add transitions.
- Export the cut. It lands in the gallery and on your disk.
Why it fits: multi-shot continuity in one app, without a second subscription tool. More on the storyboard path.
2. Thumbnail or cover still → motion bumper
Who: YouTubers and short-form editors. Uses: Image tab, Video tab, Audio.
- Make the still on the Image tab. Pick a typography-strong model like Ideogram V4 or Qwen Image 3 if there's text in the frame.
- Fix anything off by describing the change in plain English.
- Open it and choose use as start frame on the Video tab.
- Add a sound effect, or send a voice line to lip sync.
- Both files, the still and the bumper, are already in your local folder.
Why it fits: the same prompt box for still and motion, and the price on the button before every click.
3. AI inserts in a DaVinci Resolve cut
Who: editors on DaVinci Resolve Free or Studio, Mac or Linux. Uses: AssetLab Resolve.
- Generate beside the timeline; Auto-drop puts each render in an "Asset Lab" bin and on the timeline.
- Use Grab frame to pull the frame under the playhead into image-to-video or the editor.
- Make an AI transition: the last frame of clip A and the first frame of clip B become the start and end of a generated move.
- Match the grade with LUT Creator: a reference still becomes a LUT installed in Resolve's Color page, about 12¢.
- Build a sequence in Director; with Auto-drop on, only the exported cut lands on the timeline.
Why it fits: no export, download, import and relink loop for every render.
4. A narrated explainer, audio first
Who: course creators and educators. Uses: the Audio module, included in both editions.
- Write the voiceover and audition voices. Every one of the 272 has a free preview.
- Generate the read. A short line often costs a fraction of a cent.
- Optionally clone your own voice from a 10-second recording, $1.50 once.
- Time it with
(pause)or(pause 1.5)cues in the script. - Score music under a clip with the Score lane, which writes to the clip's own pacing.
- Attach the lines to Director shots, or export the audio on its own.
Why it fits: voice and score without a separate audio subscription.
5. A client batch with a brand kit
Who: freelancers and small studios. Uses: brand kits, Shot Set, compare mode, delivery packs.
- Build a brand kit: up to eight anchor images, a palette and house rules.
- Apply it as a chip on the Image or Video tab.
- Run Shot Set for coverage: up to six angles of the same moment.
- Compare the same prompt across up to three models.
- Export a delivery pack: numbered files plus a
manifest.jsonwith each prompt, model and seed. - Move the whole setup between machines with Back up / Restore.
Why it fits: a repeatable look without rebuilding references every session.
What all five have in common
- The license is $49 once; usage bills to your own Fal.ai key. What the $49 covers.
- Mac and Linux for both editions; Windows by request for the standalone.
- Renders save locally, and your key never leaves your machine except to call Fal.
- You can rehearse first: the free demo and the training course walk through every click.
Workflows
Do I need all five workflows?
No. Most people live in one or two. Start with a still and turn it into video with use as start frame; add Director when you need a multi-shot cut.
Is the Audio module a separate purchase?
No. It's included in both editions. Generating audio bills to your Fal.ai key like everything else.
Is this the same as hiring Coastal Creative Lab?
No. Asset Lab is software you run yourself. The agency and the product.
Where are the exact per-model prices?
On the rate card, at Fal's raw rates, re-checked every release.
